Gruyères – Pringy – Saussivue – Estavannens

The route leaves Gruyères and drops back down to Pringy where you can visit the Maison du Gruyère and learn all about Gruyère AOP through cheese-making demonstrations and tastings. From here, the route leaves in direction of the Sarine valley and joins the road in Saussivue passing through le Laviaux, where the Charrière des Morts (Road of the Dead) allowed access to the city of Gruyères from the upper Valley. After a few hundred meters, the trail turns left, crosses the Sarine and leaves the paved road following Maumochy stream before crossing fields and finally meeting the road above Estavannens.

Gruyères Castle

At the heart a grandiose natural panorama, the Gruyères Castle will transport you through eight centuries of history and legends. Nesting in the Fribourg Pre-alps, the medieval city of Gruyères is the ideal jump off point for hikers. The castle dominates a green hill at the foot of the Moléson and at the junction of the Jogne and Intyamon Valleys. Its walls swim in legends, its garden and its rich collections bare witness to a life and culture that has continuously inhabited the region for the last eight centuries. Continuing its tradition as an artistic crossroads, the castle plays host to art exhibits and big cultural meetings at the heart of a grandiose natural panorama.

A village made up of two hamlets on the right bank of the Sarine river. The village of Estavannens is registered in the inventory of federal sites of national importance for its two dense and homogenous hamlets made up of stone and wood houses from the 16th-19th century.

Since 1956, the Poya d’Estavannens has been an important event in the region. This festival celebrates the ascent of livestock herds to their alpine pastures. The 7th edition took place in 2013.
